SPOILER ALERT!

Burned

Burned - Ellen Hopkins I was ready to give this book 3 stars, maybe 4 stars. Until the ending. I cannot believe this. The ending was so sad. Ethan and Pattyn's baby both died because of that stupid Trevor guy. Worse, there was no justice delivered and no closure.

I dislike sad endings. I don't mind reading about tough subjects, but I prefer stories that end with a bit of hope that things will someday get better, than endings like this. Ellen Hopkins is basically telling girls like Pattyn who suffer from abuse that there is no hope. That things will never get better. Not only was it unnecessarily tragic, but the last sentence was so abrupt and sudden. It was jolting.

Obviously there is a sequel. Unfortunately, I'm too disappointed in Burned to read it, or to read any other Ellen Hopkins novels.
